Spring Moths...

What a winter this has been, we are well shot of it! After the 2015 Garden Moth Survey ended in November, I volunteered to continue through the winter for that survey too.

Well, no sooner did I do that than the weather turned. We had 10 storms, all with nice English human names such as Frank and Gertrude that covered the vast majority of the 12 week period. Even between the gales and torrential El Nino driven rain, we had cold clear nights that were useless for moths, so I decided to throw the towel in after week two and save some electricity.

March has been a great improvement with a few nice evenings to tempt out the typical early spring species. Long may it continue...

Oak Beauty, the first here since 2012.

Satellite

Dotted Border

Early Grey

I have been so looking forward to starting trapping this year, last year I started properly when I got my trap in July. The two moth I have managed to get in the trap were new to me, so that was ok. Still very cold on a evening I think and clear skies.

The Oak Beauty looks a stunning moth, would like one of these in my trap :)

It has certainly been a long and strange winter but it is good to see the moths starting to reappear isn't it :-)

That Oak Beauty is a cracking looking moth whilst the Satellite is a very nice specimen. Whenever I have trapped them they are always pretty worn and worse for wear.

Thanks all, Amanda I think you have a better chance at Oak Beauty that me! We are at the northern end of their range up here. Now is the time....
