Sugaring...Any tips?

I've made a concoction to 'sugar' for moths. I don't have a trap so I thought I'd give this a go. I Put half a bottle of Broon Ale, half a kilo of broon sugar and half a tin of broon ( well black really, but I had a theme running) treacle into a pan, boiled it up and now have it in a jar to paint on posts etc.

But, what next? When, where etc. Have any of you out there ( Rob, Skev, Dean, Steve etc) tried it? Will I get results? I'm skeptical but all the books mention it so it must be worth a shot...

So far my moths come from me wandering about with a 'million candle power' torch ( Try 'You Tube' for Rhod Gilbert doing his theory on these torches during his stand up routine) looking at Buddleia and Ragwort in the garden.

No doubt the experts will advise, but it sounds like the concoction can be used as creosote on the fence posts.

Definately Steve. I've never been a good cook....

Stewart. You can paint it on fencing, tree trunks etc. Anything that at it`s not likely to spoil. It`s best to keep checking the area every 10 mins or so.

ps : you`ll also get butterflies feeding on it during the daytime.

Well, this is fascinating. I must get me some broon ale, broon sugar and treacle, lol.

Hi Stewart, for some reason Bill Oddie coated a sock with some similar concoction for TV last year, worked a treat.

I'm sure Mrs Stewart will be thrilled to wash those foot coverings afterwards... good luck and looking forward to the results. A

I've tried this a couple of times (including earlier this year) and not had a thing to be honest.

Similar recipe to yours more or less.

Hi Stewart,

Just simply paint it on (avoiding any nice lichens of course). Would recommend adding something just before you apply it though - a drop of brandy and banana or vanilla essence works well.

You'll need to avoid shining the torch directly on to the moths as they'll probably just drop to the ground otherwise.

I've tried it a few times - virtually nothing some nights and plenty the next with no logical reason.

Forget the socks - that was Bill's eccentric alternative to a wine rope (similar principle using a sugary wine mixture instead of beer).
