They're here!

I've just seen the new post on Kingsdowner blog ( left) about the massive decline in our spuggies. Well here's the thing, I've got them. I fill that feeder above once a day and drop a handful of seed on the ground and hey presto, 120 spuggies! Go on count them ( if you do let me know how many you get. Try and include the blurred ones in flight too...)

Now that's just being plain greedy Stewart :) (Please could you send any excess down this way - I've not seen one in the garden for months....

When I've counted them I'll come back to you.

I must be getting old, I looked at the pic and thought "he's posted the wrong image his garden's full of leaves" good numbers you must be pulling them in from as far as Howick.

BB,
The local ringer and I are doing a RAS study on HS. We have ringed 0ver 400 in 5 years from his garden, which is 50yds from mine.We have never re-trapped a bird more than 4 years old, and to get one of 3 years is also a rarity. The sparrows round our way have stopped feeding on the floor, under the feeders, due to the Sparrowhawk attacks, I only get two's and three's at the feeders just before roosting time.I used to have a flock 0f 40-50.... before the Sprawk. now they all feed elsewhere.

Hi Warren.
We get regular Sparrowhawk attacks too but it doesnt seem to put the sparrows off. They dive into the hedge and chatter until the raptor has gone.

When I was a ringer several years ago BTO guidelines suggested that we didnt ring House Spugs, so we caught loads as a by product and just released them after a few were done by trainees!
