I forgot to say what it was...its the Panasonic Lumix FZ18. Not for me the joy's of the SLR. A bit too expensive for someone who just dabbles. I was impressed by Ipin's photo's on his blog, so I thought I would give it a go. It might give me a chance with some of those flitting passerines such as the Chiffy below...

Still a few Whimbrel dotted around Boulmer, another 4 in different places tonight.

Nice.

It does what you want from it, it doesn't cost a fortume, it doesn't weigh a ton and you don't mind stotting it off the occasional rocks and stuff while out and about.

I came sliding down a scree slope in Turkey with my Panasonic over my shoulder last year (went in search of a singing Rock Thrush) and thought 'thank F**k this didn't cost 2 grand' :) :)

I agree with the sentiments on the Panasonic - it's possibloe to put in a (largish) pocket, is quickly set up, and reasonably robust.
I've got a x12, and would be interested to hear how the x18 copes with the extra magnification.
